Micron Visit

STEM Education and Innovation Center recently had the opportunity to take Stafford High School's engineering club members to visit and tour Micron Technologies' recently opened factory in Manassas. Micron is one of the leading manufacturers of semiconductor chips, and the students were thrilled to have this opportunity to tour this state-of-the-art plant.

Students were treated to lunch courtesy of Micron, which they greatly appreciated! They listened to Zuzanna Steen as she explained what Micron does as an organization and how they construct their semiconductors and memory chips. Students were able to try on "clean suits" that employees working on the production of memory chips wear and could see how difficult yet essential these suits are in the construction of memory chips.

Furthermore, the students had the chance to interact with various employees at Micron, gaining insights into their roles and career paths. This interactive session allowed the students to ask questions and engage directly with professionals from different areas of the company.

Students also were able to meet a former Stafford High School student who was now a member of Steamfitters Union 602. The former student explained his career path and how when he graduated he was unsure of what he wanted to do with his life, but that joining the trades helped him tremendously and that students don’t have to follow the traditional path of going to a four year school. The students were amazed at the opportunities that the trades offered as they previously had not been exposed to the benefits of going into a trade union that were available in their area.

At the end of the day, students toured the facility and saw the factory in action. They were given a brief tour of the manufacturing area and could see up close the production of chips. The tour was a unique experience that students will not soon forget.

This visit was more than just a field trip; it was a way to inspire and show members of the engineering club a glimpse into their potential future. The students were excited to visit Micron, and many left wanting to come back again or pursue a career working with semiconductors and memory chips. Our visit was a great experience for both students and staff alike, and deeply impacted the students. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Stafford High School for allowing the engineering club to take part in this trip, and a massive thanks to Micron for inviting us and facilitating the trip by hosting and providing food and transportation.

Feedback from Stafford High School and Administration.

"We also want to thank you and Micron Technology for this wonderful opportunity as well. In the days following the trip I have had a few of our center students ask me if we could come back and do a more in depth tour next year. I even have had some showing real interest in working at Micron some day.

Furthermore, I had the wonderful opportunity this week to talk about our EPIC Center to our middle schools and talked about our trip to Micron, and several of those students were very interested in what Micron does. That is what this specialty center is all about, connecting the students with business partners and industry mentors. We certainly hope to continue a partnership."
